Shape optimization of peristaltic pumping
Transport is a fundamental aspect of biology and peristaltic pumping is a fundamental mechanism to accomplish this; it is also important to many industrial processes. We present a variational method for optimizing the wave shape of a peristaltic pump. Specifically, we optimize the wave profile of a two dimensional channel containing a Navier–Stokes fluid with no assumption on the wave profile o...
متن کاملFerrohydrodynamic pumping in spatially uniform sinusoidally time-varying magnetic fields
Past work has analyzed ferrofluid pumping in a planar duct driven by spatially non-uniform traveling wave magnetic fields. Here we examine a much simpler case where the applied magnetic fields along and transverse to the duct axis are spatially uniform and varying sinusoidally with time. In the uniform magnetic field the magnetization characteristic depends on particle spin but does not depend ...
متن کاملFerrohydrodynamic pumping in spatially traveling sinusoidally time-varying magnetic fields
In this paper, we present a numerical method to simulate the dynamics of ferrofluids in spatially traveling, sinusoidally time-varying magnetic fields. Actuation using traveling waves involves magnetic body forces and torque on the magnetic moment of nanoparticles, both of which affect the overall pumping. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. متن کاملPeristaltic pumping and irreversibility of a Stokesian viscoelastic fluid
Peristaltic pumping by wavelike contractions is a fundamental biomechanical mechanism for fluid and material transport and is used in the esophagus, intestine, oviduct, and ureter. While peristaltic pumping of a Newtonian fluid is well understood, in many important settings, as in the fluid dynamics of reproduction, the fluids have non-Newtonian responses. Here, we present a numerical method fo...
